My First Commission Check
For Agents Information Only....

My first commissions check, I remember it like it was yesterday.

It was back in the early 80's, in fact 1984 to be exact.  I was just cutting my teeth in the insurance business, straight out of the Life, Accident and Health course and state test............What you'd call a "green horn."

Another dose of reality hit me in the shower this morning when I realized that I was 18 when I started working full time here in the family agency, the exact age my oldest daughter Nikki is right now.  WOW!

Truth be told I'm not exactly sure if this was my first commission check but it's the first one I can remember because of the amount.

My dad was showing me the ropes and had me tag along on one of his appointments.  It was a term conversion for one of his old-time clients in Sloatsburg, NY. So there I was, awkwardly sitting at their dining room table like a third wheel as the realization hit me that the insurance course I took had taught me nothing about real-world insurance selling.  I sat their quietly, trying to blend in to the background and soak up as much info. as possible.

Anyway, after the deal was done and we exchanged the usual pleasantries, my dad and I headed down the road.  Once the underwriting process was over the policy was issued and delivered.  Then came that glorious day............PAY DAY.   My dad was generous and my cut was $1,000 smackerooos.......

"WOW, Nice Check"

I can still remember driving up to the window at the bank to deposit my first commission check of $1,000 Bucks.  I was grinning ear-to-ear as the teller blurted out, "WOW, nice check!"  She was a girl who worked there that I knew for a while.

Lets face it, everyone in the civilized world works for a pay check.  In our business we just happen to call it a commission check and it feels darn good to get a nice big one!

And that's the greatest part of the Medicare Supplement business.  It's like a gift that keeps giving.  It's not even what you'd call a renewal commission because it's level for as long as they keep it..............sell it once and keep on earning, the same amount, year after year, after year.  And after a while it really starts adding up when you write a few cases here and there.
